The other day Jen had a big work day for the Children’s/Preschool area at the church, so the boys and I decided to head out to Lowe’s for some Christmas decoration pre-planning (OK … and purchasing). On the way home, I stopped by Sonic to pick up some lunch. When we do the fast food joints, we typically pick it up and take it home to eat. We try not to eat much in the car unless we’re going straight to another event or on a long trip … and the boys know this is the plan.

But, just as it happens EVERY time, the boys start in on “Daddy, can I have a drink? Daddy, can I have a french fry? Daddy, can I have a piece of deep fried processed chicken parts? Daddy, can I have … ?” etc, and on and on. Each question is always answered with, “Not yet. Just wait. No. What did I just say?” etc, until I get to the point to saying, “BOYS! Stop asking. I’m not going to give you a different answer. I told you, you can have all this, but you have to wait until we get home. I’m not going to unpack this into little pieces just so you can get a taste. We’re almost there. Just wait.”

Now, I don’t know if (insert fast food joint) has ever flipped a switch for you, but immediately after those words came out of my mouth a light went off in my head, and I thought … “you know, I wonder if that’s how God feels with us most days?”

Most of us … or maybe it’s just me … come to God and say, “hey, I know You’ve got something good for me in Your bag – can I have a taste? Can You bless me with this? Can I have that?” etc, etc. etc.

Until God’s like, “Listen, do you remember what I said last time? Not yet. Just wait. We’ve been over this before. Remember, I have a plan. I may have even let you in on what that plan is, but right now it’s not time to unpack it.”

When it does come time to unpack it, we’ll have all the chicken strips, corn dogs, french fries and lemonade we can handle, and we wouldn’t have picked it apart along the way.

Hope that made sense
