Saturday night @ Nall Avenue Baptist Church Disciple Now …
This was the big service of the weekend, and everything went pretty well. Saturday night was different than Friday b/c I had three new members of the worship band playing with me. Mike Chatman was still there to play keys and give me some male bkd vocals, but then the drummer and bass players were different, and I was also able to have a female vocalist there as well.
Saturday night had a very well rounded sound, and musically we pulled it off with only one hitch … me. I had done a revised arrangement of “At the Cross.” I would normally keep this fairly traditional in the song structure (verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc) but for Saturday night, I decided (about an hour before service started) to change the song structure and do:
V1 – CHORUS – V2 (female voc) – CHORUS – chorus interlude (no voc) – V3 interlude (no voc) – V3 – CHORUS – CHORUS – TAG – transition to next song
For some reason, I just skipped right over the interlude segments where we were going to “worship through instrument” and went straight on to the end of the song. Oh well, I’m sure none of the students had any idea what was going on anyway.
I bring that up to say that the people I had playing with me that night were/are incredible at what they do. Rob Selvidge played bass, and Clifton Felton played drums for me. Rob, Clifton and Mike all live in Springfield and came up for the weekend. It wasn’t like we were completely new to each other, though. Rob and Clifton played with me for about three years in a band called ‘autumnSoul’ until my wife and I moved to Overland Park (and they didn’t). I also played with Mike for about three years at Macedonia Baptist Church where my wife was on staff as the Youth Minister (and Mike was/is the Minister of Worship).
Even though I had my blunder in the middle of a song, the musicians and vocalists I had with me this weekend were able to pickup and follow right along and not miss a single beat.
Thanks to all who were involved – from band members to leaders to host homes to supporters. It was great all the way around.
